Bringing students from their English level when they arrive in Canada into regular classes with their Canadian peers is the primary objective of the Next Achievers stream.
Little Mountain Learning Academy has had a great deal of success working with ESL learners from the beginner stage of language acquisition. Next Achievers are symbolized by a fish which represents wealth (knowledge), harmony and self-discipline.
Upon further success and with reading proficiency at about a grade 5 reading level as Next Achievers, students are ready for advancement to study as High Achievers (Deer).
Next Achievers
Ages: 6–16yrs
Entry Point: Newcomer to Canada who already has developed basic literacy skills.
Exit Point: Graduating from ESL and beginning the regular stream program at school. Reading and Writing to about grade 5 level or higher.
Courses
Accelerated English 1 and Accelerated English 2: 2-4 months of 1.5hr sessions
Assisted Reading: 4-20 weeks of 30min sessions if deemed necessary after initial assessment
Integrated English: 1-2 semesters of 2hr sessions. Ideally taken in conjunction with Reading Club.
Reading Club: 1-2 semesters of 2hr sessions. Exit point: gr 3-4 reading level.
Timeframe: 2-4 semesters
Each of the above 2hr classes is comprised of 90-minutes in-class and 30-minutes of computer lab.
