For families with younger learners, one of the most common questions we hear is:
“How do I know if my child is ready for extra English or Math classes?”
Every child develops at their own pace, and readiness isn’t only about academic skills. It also includes attention span, independence, confidence, and how comfortable they are working in a small-group learning environment.
Here are a few simple signs to help you decide whether your child is ready to join an early learning program.
1. They Can Follow Simple Instructions
Readiness at this age isn’t about knowing letters or numbers perfectly. It’s about whether they can:
- Listen to a short instruction
- Follow 1–2 steps
- Stay with an activity for a few minutes
If your child can participate in short, structured moments at home, they’re likely ready for a small-group class.
2. They Show Curiosity About Letters, Stories, or Numbers
Children don’t need to know how to read or count before joining a class.
Instead, we look for signs of interest, such as:
- Asking what a word says
- Pointing out letters
- Enjoying picture books
- Playing counting or sorting games
Curiosity is a strong indicator of readiness.
3. They Are Beginning to Build Independence
Early learning programs work best when children can:
- Sit at a table independently
- Hold a pencil or crayon
- Try activities on their own before asking for help
We don’t expect perfection – just a willingness to try.
4. They’re Comfortable in a Small-Group Setting
Pre-K to Grade 1 students don’t need to be fully confident, but they should be able to:
- Be away from a parent for the duration of the class
- Work alongside other children
- Participate in classroom routines
If your child can settle after a short transition, they’re generally well-prepared.
