How to Answer Open-Ended Questions

February 6, 2025

At Little Mountain, we guide students to approach open-ended questions with confidence and clarity. By teaching them how to provide detailed and engaging responses, we help develop their critical thinking and communication skills. Here’s our simple strategy to craft complete and thoughtful answers.

Why Full Answers Matter

Open-ended questions give students the opportunity to share their thoughts and demonstrate their understanding. A well-developed answer not only addresses the question but also provides context, details, and personal reflections.

Let’s start with an example:

Question: What did you do last weekend?

✅ Great Answer:
Last weekend, I went to the park with my family. We played soccer, had a picnic, and stayed until sunset. It was so much fun because we laughed a lot and enjoyed the sunny weather.

❌ Incomplete Answer:
“Went to park and played soccer.”

How to Extend Your Answer

To turn a short response into a complete one, think about these key questions:

  • Where? I went to the park.
  • Who? I was with my family.
  • When? It was last weekend.
  • What? We played soccer and had a picnic.
  • How I felt? It was so much fun!

By including these details, the answer becomes richer and more interesting.

Another Example

Question: What is your favourite holiday, and why?

✅ Great Answer:
My favourite holiday is Christmas because I get to spend time with my family, decorate the house with lights, and exchange gifts. I love how the season feels magical and joyful.

❌ Incomplete Answer:
“Christmas. It’s fun.”

Tips for Extending Your Answers

Here are three simple ways to help students provide more detailed responses:

1️⃣ Add Details:
Think about the where, who, when, and what.

2️⃣ Explain Why:
Why is this meaningful to you? Why did you enjoy it?

3️⃣ Describe Feelings:
How did it make you feel? Adding emotions makes your answer personal and relatable.

Practice Makes Perfect

Parents can help reinforce this skill at home:

  • Encourage your child to elaborate on their answers during conversations.
  • Ask follow-up questions like “Why do you think that?” or “Can you tell me more?”
  • Praise detailed answers to build their confidence.

With consistent practice, students will learn to answer open-ended questions thoughtfully and expressively—an invaluable skill for both academics and everyday life!
